A gate valve lifts a flat or wedge-shaped gate out of the flow path with a handwheel. Fully open, it leaves almost no obstruction, so pressure loss is very low. It is an on/off valve: it is not meant to throttle flow, because a part-open gate vibrates and wears.
We stock brass gate valves for plumbing and water lines, stainless steel gate valves for seawater and corrosive service, cast steel gate valves for higher pressure and temperature process lines, and knife gate valves, whose sharpened blade cuts through slurry, pulp and solids that would jam a standard gate. Common questions
Gate valve or globe valve?+
A gate valve is for full open or full shut with minimal pressure drop. A globe valve is built to regulate flow, at the cost of a higher pressure drop. Use gate valves for isolation and globe valves where you need to throttle.
What is a knife gate valve used for?+
Knife gate valves have a thin, sharp-edged gate that cuts through thick media such as slurry, sludge, pulp and powders, which would stop a standard wedge gate from closing.
