A butterfly valve uses a disc on a central shaft: a quarter turn swings the disc edge-on to open the line or across the bore to close it. The body is short and light compared with a gate valve of the same size, which makes butterfly valves the usual choice on larger water, cooling and HVAC lines.
We stock wafer type butterfly valves, which clamp between two pipe flanges on through-bolts, lug type valves with threaded lugs that bolt to each flange separately, and lever-operated valves with a notched plate for setting part-open positions.

Common questions
Wafer or lug butterfly valve?+
A wafer valve is held between two flanges by long bolts, so both sides of the line must be in place. A lug valve bolts to each flange on its own, so one side of the pipe can be removed while the valve still holds the other side. Lug type suits end-of-line and maintenance points.
Can a butterfly valve control flow?+
Yes, within limits. A lever with a notched plate holds the disc part-open for rough flow control. For fine throttling a globe valve is the better choice.
