3000 vs 2000 vs 1000 PSI forged fittings: choosing the right class

Forged fittings are rated by pressure class rather than by a single working pressure. The class tells you how heavily built the fitting is — and the right one depends on the line it joins, not just the pressure in it.

What the class number means

The number is a class designation, not the maximum pressure the fitting will hold in service. A class 3000 fitting is built with thicker walls than a class 2000 one of the same size, so it carries a higher allowable pressure at a given temperature. Actual working pressure falls as temperature rises, and it also depends on the material grade and the pipe schedule the fitting is matched to.

As a rule of thumb, the class should match the schedule of the pipe it joins. Class 3000 fittings pair with heavier schedule pipe; specifying a high class fitting on thin pipe does not make the joint stronger, because the pipe becomes the weak point.

Socket weld or threaded?

Socket weld fittings have a recessed bore: the pipe slides in and is fillet welded around the outside. The joint is permanent, leak-tight and well suited to higher pressures and to lines that must not be disturbed. It needs a welder and access around the joint.

Threaded fittings screw onto threaded pipe ends and can be assembled with hand tools. They suit smaller utility lines, temporary runs and locations where hot work is not permitted. Threads are a potential leak path, so they are generally used at lower pressures than the equivalent socket weld fitting.

Both types are available across the classes we stock, in elbows, tees, crosses, unions, couplings, half couplings, bosses, outlets, swage nipples, bushings, plugs and caps.

Ordering: what to specify

To get a quote that matches first time, send four things for each line:

For example: "Elbow 90, 1/2 in, 3000 PSI, socket weld — 200 pcs." If you are unsure of the class, tell us the line pressure, the medium and the pipe schedule and we will advise.
